Clamming with the Janes

Interested in digging for clams? Fridays and weekends, from mid-April through early October, we take small groups on clamming experiences, tailored to your time and interest. From clamming 101, to “from raking to making” culinary classes, we can offer an educational 360 clamming experience that immerses you in the beauty and the true flavors of the North Fork. Join us at low-tide and unhinge with us!

Email us at hello@clamityjanes.com with any questions and get started creating your custom experience.

Clamming is a sensory experience that connects you with the beauty of the North Fork in a deeply immersive way. The Janes are excited to share this experience with you.

We take groups of 2-8 people on private tours in public, licensed shellfish harvesting zones between Orient and Jamesport. The time of day will change per the tide table, as we clam at the hours surrounding low tide. Thus, each tour will be customized per group, based on the tide times. (Yes, children are allowed as long as they are with their legal guardians and are comfortable in the water, and are mature enough to follow instructions. Rakes are sharp!)

We will provide the equipment: clam rakes, basket, collection bags, and cooler to store the clams.

The clams we forage are wild. They live in shallow bay water, just under the sandy bottoms. We will provide basic raking instructions and safe handling practices for both the equipment and shellfish, and take you into the bay to clam. Clamming takes patience, and often it takes a while to find a sweet spot with clams, but patience pays off. (Clamming is more like fishing, not guaranteed you’ll catch anything)

The party will need to feel comfortable getting waist-deep in bay water, and expect to get wet up to at least your elbows. Depending on your adventure level, we can take the party to locations that are more or less accessible. There will be some walking involved.

Attire: closed-toe water shoes that stay on your feet when walking in the bay, swimsuit or swim shorts/swim shirt, hats, sunscreen.

You should expect to spend approximately 1.5-2.5 hours total. See below for an idea of the baseline experiences offered. Reach out and we can customize an experience for your group.
